Without search engines, Internet would be like a country with roads, cities and streets without names, and houses without number. In other words, it is easy for a huge labyrinth, to land in the usual places, but it is almost impossible to find a particular site of an unknown company. So search engines are important.

And today, to say search on the Internet is almost the same as saying to Google, but are there any alternatives to it? Yes, on the one hand, are those of Yahoo! and Microsoft's Live Search, who have shone in the past and have no plan to give up.

On the other hand, there are lesser-known projects, which are raised as options, working in some cases for many years, trying to refine some search technology that is more effective than the formidable brute force of Google.

To find some alternative search engines, one of the interesting websites means just what it actually does in a phrase: this is WhoisLike.it. This tool proposes a different way of looking on the Internet. It is responsible for finding sites similar to that prompted. And when asked similar sites to www.google.com, it threw a list (incomplete, incidentally) of seventeen search engines.

Among them was Lexxe, a search engine that presents itself as the third generation search engine. Lexxe is an exponent of a group of search engines using technologies of the so-called Natural Language Processing, which in addition to recognizing words or sequences of them, trying to interpret phrases in different contexts to rank better results.

Other search engines are trying to differentiate themselves with an operation similar to the traditional, but adding something to additional services. Among them is Exalead, a project of French origin that has a Spanish version. Exalead offers a home page that can be customized easily generate shortcuts to frequently used sites. In addition, this shows next to each search result a small screenshot of the site found. And on the left hand side, it proposes options to refine the search, using words related, types of site (only in weblogs, forums, etc.). Media are available (audio, video), or file types. The search engine also facilitates the search terms in the online encyclopedia Wikipedia.

Several specialized search engines are also available that only deal with one topic or specific file type. Thus, there are games, videos, audio, or weblogs. GameSkoot, for example, is searching for everything related to video games.

Occasionally, people also need help finding information on the Internet but not on the hard drive itself. For that, Windows brings tools and useful software such as Google Desktop, which offers speedy solution to finding what are stored in the computer. The Windows Search, Microsoft promises the same.

As can be seen, although the competition has some clear leaders, there are several alternatives for those who want to try out.

Original in Spanish: Encontra la precisa, como aguja en el pajar
